I just added a beautiful new blueish/greenish Gourami and an algae eater to my aquarium. The Gourami is absolutely gorgeous and I could stare at the little dear all day. When I add fish, I mostly have the children in mind and what they would like to look at. My daughter and little baby boy both love to look at the aquarium.
I just got done thoroughly cleaning the tank last night and thought that since it has been up for so long and is doing so well that I’d add two new additions. Our tank looks so much livelier now. At times I wish I had a pet that I could interact with more such as a bird or kitty… cats and dogs are not allowed in this apartment complex though, only caged animals.
I had to leave my dog and cats with my dad.. It can get kind of lonely without a furry little critter to keep you company. One thing that I would love to accomplish sometime, would be to become a veterinarian. There are so many bad ones and my goal is to just make a difference. It would also be wonderful to start my own animal shelter as my pets have always been there in my time of need so why shouldn’t I be there for them in theirs? They never turn their back on you, they are one of the best friends you can have.
Animals have and always will be therapeutic and it cannot be denied. If you don’t have a pet friend in your life and you aren’t happy. Well, that says a lot.
Ok so I’m a bit of an amateur when it comes to maintaining an aquarium.. sure I know the basics but I think I was in a bit of a rush at getting fish. A bit of advice to anyone would be to NOT stock your tank with lots of fish when you first get it! 1 or 2 fish is fine, especially in a 10 gallon tank! Then after about 6-8 weeks.. adding a new fish every week is fine.
If you throw in too many fish in the beginning, the ammonia level in the water becomes way too high because of all the fish waste and this is very harmful to the fish. The good bacteria hasn’t had long enough to grow before the 6-8 weeks but once it is established then it takes care of most of the ammonia. A general rule for ESTABLISHED aquariums is one inch of adult fish per gallon. Keep in mind that it may take a few tiny neon tetras to make that one inch and don’t forget that the fish are usually young when you buy them and that they are going to get bigger.
Being that I’ve lost several fish It’s been pretty disappointing.. the fish that we still have left seem to be doing very well except for one who just keeps hanging on but doesn’t look well at all. I’m mostly disappointed in myself not the aquarium =/
